Nativa for Nature

nativa for nature tree planting wilderness heights wildlife corridor precious tree project

Since its inception, Nativa has been fuelled by a single minded purpose: “To enrich people’s lives by delivering trusted solutions that improve wellness and quality of life.” Going beyond the products they supply for human health and wellbeing, Nativa have joined forces with Precious Tree Project to improve the quality of life of our wildlife as they pass through local corridors across the Wilderness landscape.

Wildlife corridors are important as they :

  • Provide safe passageway & a sleeping haven away from predators & roads/highways
  • Provide a habitat for foraging on natural food sources
  • Create a link to vital water sources
  • Provide escape cover and shelter during bad weather
  • Increase genetic variability as animals migrate across the greater landscape via these corridors

Many of these corridors are heavily infested with alien invasive species (particularly pine and wattle) and rehabilitating and reforesting these corridors are important to:

  • Restore plant and animal biological diversity to the corridor
  • Increase movement of species through the landscape by removing dense sections of alien trees
  • Increase natural food availability for a variety of wildlife species
  • Ensures diverse habitats within the corridor for the diverse needs of individual species

Following our tried and tested methodology, we thinned and cleared out alien invasive species in a section of our Wilderness Heights Wildlife Corridor and planted a mini forest pocket comprising a range of endemic tree species to assist the natural reforestation process in this part of the corridor. Tree species we planted out include:

  • Wild peach
  • Wild mulberry
  • Boekenhout
  • Red crowberry
  • Keurboom
  • White stinkwood
  • Outeniqua Yellowwood
  • Pompon
  • False olive

With a super El Ninjo on its way and the dry heat it is bringing to the Western Cape over the next few months, we boosted the trees with Earthworm juice and inoculated biochar to give the forest trees the best chance of survival while the trees take root in the ground.

Thank you Nativa for your contribution, not only to human health, but towards nature, animal and environmental health. We appreciate you!
