Jan Cilliers de Wet

“This little painting represents something of a sea change for me creatively. Rather than being based on a specific idea and then carefully planned before committing to canvas, it came together almost by accident.

It grew out of small random details in my daily world – some branches of a tree, a mark on a window and so on – and these details gathered together onto the canvas in the whim of the moment.

Somewhere along the line I realised that a narrative had appeared, where these simple elements had become placeholders for the larger drama I was watching unfolding in the news. At least for me, that is.

This approach – of allowing squiggles onto the canvas – looks like leading into a new creative landscape to explore, as more ideas are lining up for much the same treatment.” – Jan Cilliers de Wet
